Der nächste große Schritt beim Bau unserer Makani ist geschafft – die Stringer sind dran! Aber bevor wir sie am Rumpf befestigen konnten, mussten wir erst ein wenig Vorarbeit leisten. Die gelieferten Stringer kamen nämlich nicht in voller Länge, sodass wir sie zunächst miteinander verbinden mussten.
Verklebung der Stringer – Schritt für Schritt
Für die Verklebung haben wir das Harz im Mischverhältnis 2:1 zunächst auf die Schäftung aufgetragen, damit das Holz das Harz vorab aufsaugen kann – eine wichtige Grundlage für eine stabile Verbindung. Danach wurde das Harz mit einem Stellmittel angedickt, sodass es nicht verläuft. So konnten wir die einzelnen Teile sauber miteinander verkleben.
Mit dieser Technik hatten wir unsere Stringer schließlich in voller Länge – ein gutes Gefühl, die langen Linien des Bootes endlich greifbar vor sich zu haben.

The next big step in the construction of our Makani is done – the stringers are on! But before we could attach them to the hull, we first had to do a bit of preparatory work. The stringers we received were not the full length, so we had to join them together first.
Bonding the stringers – step by step
For bonding, we first applied the resin to the stock in a mixing ratio of 2:1 so that the wood could absorb the resin in advance – an important basis for a stable bond. The resin was then thickened with a setting agent so that it would not run. This allowed us to glue the individual parts together cleanly.
Using this technique, we finally had our stringers in full length – a good feeling to finally have the long lines of the boat tangible in front of us.
Anpassung an die Frames
Bevor wir die Stringer verschrauben konnten, mussten wir die Frames exakt an die Biegung der Stringer anpassen. Dazu haben wir mit dem Multitool an den Rahmen D1, D, E sowie am Bugbereich etwas Holz abgetragen. Nur so konnten die Stringer der geschwungenen Linienführung folgen und sich perfekt einfügen.
Dann kam der Moment: Schraube für Schraube wurde angesetzt – und Stück für Stück nahm die Makani sichtbar Gestalt an. Es war unglaublich, die Linien des Bootes endlich erkennen zu können. Ein echter Gänsehautmoment!

Adjustment to the frames
Before we could screw the stringers together, we had to adjust the frames exactly to the bend of the stringers. To do this, we used the multitool to remove some wood from frames D1, D, E and the bow area. This was the only way the stringers could follow the curved lines and fit in perfectly.
Then came the moment: screw after screw was fitted – and piece by piece, the Makani visibly took shape. It was incredible to finally be able to see the lines of the boat. A real goosebump moment
Zwangspause durch das Wetter
Leider machte uns der Winter einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Die Außentemperaturen lagen unter +10 °C – zu kalt, um mit dem Harz weiterzuarbeiten. Das Warten hat sich wie eine Ewigkeit angefühlt. Wir wollten endlich weitermachen und unser Projekt voranbringen.
Doch dann kam der Temperaturumschwung – und wir legten los.
Feinschliff mit Hobel und Bandschleifer
Nachdem alle Stringer verklebt waren, mussten sie noch sorgfältig an die Form der Frames angepasst werden. Grob ging das mit dem Elektrohobel – hier war allerdings Fingerspitzengefühl gefragt, um die empfindlichen Sperrholzteile nicht zu beschädigen. Für die Feinheiten kam die Bandschleifmaschine zum Einsatz – das funktionierte erstaunlich gut!

Forced break due to the weather
Unfortunately, winter put a spanner in the works. The outside temperatures were below +10 °C – too cold to continue working with the resin. The wait felt like an eternity. We finally wanted to get on with it and move our project forward.
But then the temperature changed – and we got started.
Finishing touches with a planer and belt sander
Once all the stringers had been glued, they still had to be carefully adjusted to the shape of the frames. This was done roughly with the electric planer – but it required a sure instinct to avoid damaging the delicate plywood parts. The belt sander was used for the finishing touches – it worked surprisingly well!
Jetzt, wo alle Stringer angepasst sind, steht der nächste große Schritt bevor: die Beplankung des Rumpfes.
Fazit: Makani nimmt Form an
Mit den angebrachten Stringern beginnt die Makani nun, ihr endgültiges Gesicht zu zeigen. Jeder dieser Schritte bringt uns näher an unser Ziel – ein selbstgebautes Hochseesegelboot, bereit für das große Abenteuer.

With the stringers in place, the Makani is now beginning to show its final face. Each of these steps brings us closer to our goal – a self-built offshore sailing boat, ready for the big adventure.
